A “House of Books” proposed for Church Square in Rye, East Sussex. The proposal features a mixed use scheme which has both a public element and a domestic accommodation. The building ties with the Rye Arts Festival, connecting with the medieval town’s rich historical context of literature. The proposal features a Book Hall, a book doctor’s studio, a rare books collection space, reading chambers, a writers’ bar and accommodations for stay. The proposal has been influenced by precedents such as John Soane House Museum, the Red House by Tony Fretton and Maison de Verre in various aspects. Located on the elevated apex of the citadel of Rye, the proposal aims to become an emblem to bring the historical town into its new era through literature, especially a town where old tales still lingers on in its cobble stone streets and picturesque facades.
