The project focuses on responding to both the recent housing crisis and involving the feeling of community, through the use of materiality, space and openings. With the site located in Rye, East Sussex, a design merging both a community centre and almshouse has been thought to be appropriate for the setting. With the area seeing issues in the decline of affordable housing, it has impacted the elderly significantly where in some cases they have had to move away from their home town. This proposal aims to give units to those in need with the help of charities to help sustain the building. The design also acts as an extension of the existing community with the choice to rent out spaces and help maintain a social life in the building, seeing the idea of belonging in a community grow into the design.
