During this project on pickling and preservation, I discovered themes of preventing waste, sustaining life, tradition, and habits.
I made an animation ‘Pickle’ that explores the time-based process of pickling through glimpses into the life of a pickler, as a child to elderly, depicting different scenes relating to the culture, familiarity, and stewardship of pickling. From making your first jar of pickles, mealtimes – using chopsticks so you don’t contaminate the pickle, sharing – giving a jar to your neighbour when you’ve made too much, upping production to the next level with a manufacturing station and barrels of pickles, to revisiting your little pickle cupboard when you’re old.
