Mari Yamamoto is a filmmaker from Japan. She is interested in topics such as disabled people and their families, young carers and mental wellness.

After graduating from the Japan Academy of Moving Images in Japan, she worked in film production and worked her way up from assistant to director in television production before becoming a camera assistant. After learning moving image and photographic techniques, she became an assistant producer, drawing on all of her previous experience. Before she coming to the UK, she worked in 90 Seconds (An international cloud video creation platform) as an assistant production manager in Japan. While working in an international environment, she became interested in studying in the UK and moved to the UK before the age of 30.
After enrolling in MAFilmmaking, she directed ‘When I knew’, a portrait and documentary about a disabled older sibling and her own family. She also worked as a producer for the class’s fiction film, ‘DARKTOPIA’. And then, directed and edited fiction short film, YUME in the dream, for individual work. This is about the loneliness of an Asian woman living in the UK using the documentary method. For her graduation project, she made ‘BEING SUNSHINE’, a documentary about a woman in London who has lived as a young carer since the age of 13. The research started in May, and after negotiating with 27 charities in London, Mari miraculously met the amazing protagonist.
