STUDIO BRIEF: Studio 3.5 is based in the seaside town of Margate; one idea behind our brief stems from recent events whereby we, analyse the importance of our homes and surrounding community to our quality of life. With the careful and considerate design, our studio attempts to design a housing plan in Margate caring for the site’s nature and community; we are asked to create at least 50 residential units that contemplate the public and private realm. The building must coalesce with the community creating a marriage between the several types of users of the space; essentially creating a hub for the community, which will bring life back into the declining seaside town and boost its economy.

THESIS STATEMENT: A person will move to seaside towns to get closer to the outdoors and become closer with nature and the coast, so my design will incorporate, and be dictated by the nature of the site and contain elements that create a coalescing between the outdoors and the indoors.

I believe that people who move to seaside towns, especially from large built-up cities, want areas that allow them to create a relationship with the community whilst also being able to keep a layer of their familiar privacy. I believe that creating spaces that accommodate the community as a central hub, with layers of said privacy, a connection to the community and nature will once again breathe life into seaside towns and promote residing in the area even during non-peak seasons.

Essentially my thesis is that architecture can ignite a relationship with nature, whereby architecture creates a symbolic bridge that connects both people/residents with aforementioned nature, this is important as nature has the power to affect a person’s attitude which in turn impacts the way a person views and interacts with said architecture a key methodology I intend to use to inform this project.
