The Craft School offers workshops and accommodation to visitors and craftspeople as well as a cafe and gallery. The craft school typology was never going to be a singular building but rather a series of buildings. The question then became how to bring a series of buildings together in a landscape as separate entities but still unified. The intuitive decision for the project was to create a corral. This initially began with an external perimeter wall but on visiting the site I was able to situate the project in the dell framed between trees. This location defined an otherwise open landscape and allowed the perimeter walls to be absorbed by the buildings. The internal space of the buildings becomes the interstitial space with the courtyard acting as the internal lining and the walls the corral. The buildings act as both space and wall. The courtyard acts as the main space of the project and all movement between buildings is through the walkways of the internal lining.
