Muse is a set of candle holders and reflectors which are designed for a luxury lighting dining experience.
The design evolved through the reaction of light and its surroundings. Looking at reflection and refraction. The use of sand-casting and the material to be a functional property as well as an aesthetic, was also a driving force for this project. Sand-casting allows for a smooth surface, along with a high-quality polished finish, creating that all-important aesthetic design for the product, making the processes a critical part of the design.
The properties of smooth polished brass create beautiful reflections of light while shiny itself making for a simple metallic aesthetic. Having the reflector and holder stackable but separate, constructs for the use of the product to be easy and simple. Storage of the Muse Set is meek as the reflector is stacked onto the holder, which stores the taper candle as well as protecting it, prepared for its next use. Having the reflector and holder separate exacerbates the products splendour through its playful interaction by the user. Its modular design allows for users to change the distance between the light and the reflector, affecting the lighting atmosphere, giving more control to the users lighting surroundings. This is strikingly contrasted by the chaos of flickering candle light.
The manufacturing processes allow for multiple products to be made in one pour with access materials (sprues and off cuts) easily recycled for the next pour, maximising the material use. Molds also make the process very quick. No added parts or materials are needed in the production line. The next part being its high-quality finish which is where the most attention is needed. All these costs become reduced with increased demand.
